Equipment for disabled persons

wheelchair platformsSurely each of us, when entering a larger room where there was no direct access for the disabled, has seen the transport platforms installed in the wall. These enable people on crutches or in a wheelchair to get to higher floors. These devices include a platform and a lifting mechanism, which is usually equipped with a hydraulic or electric drive. These devices are classified as material handling equipment and remove architectural barriers for the disabled.

Carrying out regular maintenance checks will ensure that the disabled platform is kept in good condition. If we are keen to keep our equipment in a long service life, we should not forget about this. In emergency situations, we should find an alternative for the operation of our equipment. In this case, it is a necessity to find a battery-powered option such as stair chairs.

Maintenance

Maintenance of lifts for the disabled involves replacing a faulty component of the lifting system. The maintenance work aims to remove the effects of the equipment's operation on an ongoing basis. This thereby minimises the risk of failure and ensures passenger safety.

Types of maintenance:

  • Corrective maintenance - involves carrying out repairs to equipment or appliances after sudden damage or breakdown.
  • Preventive maintenance - is inspections (and repairs) even when there is no need. Typically, this type of maintenance is planned in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions or management policy.

Maintenance-related areas to look out for:

  • Operation of safety devices and movement limiters
  • Technical condition of drive mechanisms, mountings or braking systems
  • Proper handling of handling equipment
  • Operation of control, signalling or lighting equipment
