What are flange connections?

These are two opposing coaxial flanges joined by bolts. The type of connection depends on the type of flange, and often there may be a gasket between them. Connections made in this way are detachable and are a key part of any pressure apparatus. This is why it is so important that the flange connection is properly made according to the prepared design and in accordance with the requirements of the European Pressure Directive (PED). In this way, the resulting installation will guarantee a safe and long service life.

Flange connections

Flanged connections. When choosing the type of flange connection, the most important thing is that it should ensure easy operation, i.e. assembly and disassembly, and safety. We can distinguish between connections for: pipeline to pipeline or pipeline to fittings. A factor that determines the durability of the connection made is its material and the type of fasteners.

Type of connections:

  • Grooved connections - flexible and fast, resistant to high pressures
  • Push-fit connections - for small diameters on water connections to residential buildings (Hawle ISO system)
  • Screw connections - for the Hawle FIT system

What are these connections used for? They find their application in water supply connections to residential buildings, grocery shops or offices, but also in industry: oil refineries, the chemical industry, the power industry.

Assembly and disassembly

Both assembly and disassembly are the responsibility of a person with adequate knowledge of flange joint operation and safety principles. Professional knowledge and skills can be acquired by taking appropriate courses provided by some training centres.

When working, the qualified fitter should bear in mind: the danger of failure, e.g. explosion, fire, consequent pollution of soil, water and air, as well as the losses suffered by all the units dependent on such a connection (caused by work stoppage).

How to prevent unwanted obstructions? Proper and cyclical maintenance of the connection is key - leaving aside the entire installation operation, which should be carried out by a competent professional - otherwise the risk of failure of the pressure equipment increases.

Entitlements and SPAs

In order to obtain a TÜV Certificate (in accordance with EN 1591-4) - which entitles you to perform and supervise flange connections throughout Poland and other European countries - you must complete a training course and pass an examination. Operator Training Centre  (OSO) has been providing training courses for the past fifteen years, providing comprehensive training that is both theoretical and practical. The full training course, which will be supervised by highly qualified staff, is followed by an examination and, if passed, a TÜV certificate and a certificate of completion are awarded. Training courses are conducted throughout Poland, OSO has facilities that meet the requirements of the Office of Technical Inspection. In order to find out more about the full training offer and other services provided by the OSO, we invite you to visit the official website szkolenia-udt.pl and to telephone contact in order to cooperate.
