Construction crane training

About the CSO training offer

freight crane on site

Operator Training Centre has courses on offer for you:

  • construction cranes,
  • commodities,
  • freight and passenger.

Together with highly qualified staff, we have developed a training course that meets the requirements of technical supervision and provides comprehensive preparation for the UDT exam. Our aim is to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully pass both the theoretical and practical parts of the exam.

Requirements from candidates

Our requirements are only:

  • at least eighteen years of age,
  • at least primary education,
  • a medical certificate issued by an occupational physician.

Characteristics of construction cranes

Construction cranes are an indispensable part of any building site during the erection of large structures, with the most common type, widely used in volume construction, being the construction crane. The largest crane equipment, it is available in a variety of sizes in both height and width.

They can be distinguished on the basis of mobility, these are:

  • stationary cranes (constructed on site),
  • portable,
  • mobile,
  • automotive,
  • self-propelled (with rail or tracked chassis),
  • on-board.

The main parameter of the machine that we use to determine its quality is the maximum load. This machine can reach a lifting height of even more than 100 metres.
The basic parameters responsible for the efficiency and functionality of building cranes are assumed to be:

  • load capacity,
  • boom type,
  • lifting height.

Crane hire

More often than not, users or construction company owners look at these features when purchasing or operating. For this reason, the best reputation is given to proven companies with many years of experience in the market and which meet all safety requirements. Often, construction companies are unable to afford to buy such equipment, so they opt for rental. What should we look for when renting? First and foremost, the quality of the crane, the reputation of the company, its experience and ratings, and the overall scope of the entire product range - rental companies with a wide range of products are companies with greater customer confidence. All construction cranes are subject to technical inspection, which certifies that the equipment is fit for work, i.e. the vertical movement of people and/or loads.
Due to these characteristics, we can distinguish:

  • passenger and goods passenger lift (commonly known as lifts)moving cargo and people alike,
  • freight crane, used exclusively for the movement of cargo.

Place of work

Freight cranes are designed to transport loads to different floors of buildings. They are most often a self-supporting structure, which we use a control panel to operate. In order to be an operator of such a machine, you need to be suitably qualified. The most important parameter of a lift is its lifting capacity, e.g. for a personnel lift, i.e. for moving people and goods, it is from 900 kg upwards. Cranes with a high lifting capacity already have structural elements attached to facilitate the loading and unloading of goods using forklifts, electric or pallet trucks. The strength of the unit comes from the drive coming from EC-type cylinders (telescopic with mechanical synchronisation) or TCS-type cylinders (with narrow shafts). In various cases, it is common to fit additional handrails to stabilise the floor during loading.

Crane construction

Knowledge of the construction of the machine being operated is required for correct and efficient operation. People or loads are moved in cabins or on platforms that move along vertical guides (or inclined at a slight angle to the vertical). A different design is characterised by the crane (construction crane). This is the machine responsible for the construction of office buildings, skyscrapers and edifices. A crane consists of a column and a boom, the use of which, we can differentiate according to the type of crane. The column is most often reduced to a rotating base on which a pivoting boom of telescopic design is located. The jib is mainly installed in two places: it is pivoted at an appropriate angle at the top of the column or in the centre of the column (in this case, the chief operating officer is responsible for its movement). At the other end of the jib is the linkage. In order for the crane to operate efficiently, it needs electric motors to provide the power it needs to do its job - these are most commonly used to rotate/tilt the boom, drive the undercarriage, lift the hook and move the jib. Without them, the operation of the machine would not be possible.

Types of cranes

A crane is commonly referred to as a lift or lift because of the functions it performs - it is a machine with which the transportation of a load (people or goods) on a platform or cabin can be carried out quickly and efficiently. The slides, which we mentioned earlier, are inclined at a minimum angle of 15 degrees to the horizontal surface between the different floors of the building. Applying the different elements of construction, and thus the functions that the lift performs, we can differentiate it into different types, such as:

  • drive type: hydraulic and electric cranes,
  • lift shaft design: panoramic (open shaft), lift with and without machine room,
  • construction of the drive mechanism: with and without reducer,
  • lift control method: external, internal, collective, group, override, dispatch control,
  • crane design: single-cabin and double-cabin,
  • Purpose: passenger lifts, goods lifts, passenger-freight lifts, hospital lifts, building lifts, special lifts.

UDT qualifications

Crane licences are available in two categories.

Building cranesIn-house and hospital cranes and passenger lifts
Building freightFreight and passenger transport with internal controls
Freight and passengerHospital without cabin load control
